Greece is a country that is known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. It is a destination that offers something for everyone, from history buffs to beach lovers.
During our recent trip to Greece, we had the opportunity to visit some of its most popular destinations, including Athens, Rhodes, Santorini, and Mykonos. We were able to see each island while on our Greek Island Glow Virgin Voyages cruise. Each of these places has its own unique charm and beauty, and we fell in love with them for different reasons.
Athens
Athens, the capital city of Greece, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. The city is home to iconic landmarks such as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Walking through the streets of Athens feels like stepping back in time, with ancient ruins scattered throughout the city. We loved the blend of ancient and modern architecture, and the vibrant atmosphere of the Plaka neighborhood. One of our favorite stops was Monastiraki Square.
We visited the Acropolis, Parthenon, Mount Lycabettus. We also went to the Ancient Agora, the Acropolis Museum, the National Garden and the Olympic Stadium.
During our time in Athens, we stayed at the Brown Lighthouse Athens Hotel. This boutique hotel's location was perfect, situated in the heart of Athens and within walking distance of many attractions. The rooms at the Brown Lighthouse Athens Hotel were stylish and comfortable, with modern amenities and beautiful views of the city. One of the highlights of our stay was the delicious breakfast buffet offered at the hotel. It featured a wide variety of Greek and international dishes, including fresh fruits, pastries, cheeses, and traditional Greek delicacies (and mimosas!). It was the perfect start to each day of exploring Athens.
The rooftop bars surrounding the square were perfect for a light bite or drinks with a picture perfect Parthenon View.
Rhodes
Rhodes is an island in the Aegean Sea, known for its medieval Old Town and beautiful beaches. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is surrounded by impressive medieval walls. Exploring the narrow cobblestone streets and stumbling upon hidden courtyards and cute restaurants was a highlight of our visit. The island also offers a variety of stunning beaches, with some of the bluest water we have ever seen!
Santorini
Santorini is famous for its breathtaking sunsets and unique architecture. The island is known for its white-washed buildings, blue-domed churches, and narrow streets.
After getting off of the ship we took the cable cars up to Fira. We walked through the town and hopped on the bus over to Oia for some more exploring. The views from the cliffside town of Oia were beautiful. We shopped, stopped for some drinks and light bites, and walked the many stairs of Santorini.
Mykonos
Mykonos is a popular destination for party-goers and beach lovers. The island is known for its vibrant nightlife, with numerous bars and clubs that come alive after sunset. During the day, we enjoyed exploring the picturesque town of Mykonos, with its charming windmills, narrow streets, and boutique shops. We enjoyed the breezy coastal weather and the shady streets.
Greek Culture
Greek culture is rich and diverse, with a history that spans thousands of years. The Greeks are known for their warm hospitality, love of food, and vibrant traditions. During my time in Greece, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture and learn more about the traditions and customs that make Greece so unique.
One aspect of Greek culture that we loved was the emphasis on food and dining. Greek cuisine is flavorful and diverse, with dishes that are made with fresh, local ingredients. From moussaka to souvlaki, we indulged in a variety of traditional Greek dishes during our trip.
Exploring the local markets was another way we experienced Greek culture. The bustling markets were filled with colorful fruits, vegetables, spices, and local products.
Overall, our trip to Greece was a truly unforgettable experience. From the historical sites to the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, Greece has so much to offer. Whether you're a history buff, a beach lover, or a food enthusiast, Greece is a destination that will captivate your heart and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
